Ways to Avoid Dehydration
With summer in full-force and temperatures on the rise, the risk of dehydration is common. Dehydration basically means your body is losing more fluid then it's receiving, which can leave you feeling really sick. When you're out having fun in the sun, it can be easy to forget about your health. But if you follow these tips, you can stay safe while still having fun.
1. Drink plenty of water. This one's pretty obvious, but it's extremely important. If you're going to be out in the sun, take a bottle or two of water with you. You could also grab a sports drink, but those tend to have quite a bit of sugar in them. If you plan on doing a strenuous activity, such as running or playing sports, drink a few glasses of water before you go. Even if you don't feel thirsty, you should still drink something to prevent dehydration from happening.
2. Avoid caffeine. Drinking things like soda or coffee usually makes people have to use the restroom more frequently, which is definitely not a good thing when you're trying to avoid getting dehydrated. While you may think soda tastes better, water is your best bet.
3. Watch what you wear. Make sure you wear light clothing that will keep you cool. Loose-fitting clothing is also a good idea. Stay away from dark colored clothing because they absorb heat. A cute summer dress or even a tank top and shorts would be fine.
4. Be aware of the signs. Watch for labored breathing, fatigue, faster pulse, flushed skin, cracked lips, headache, and weakness. These are all signs of possible dehydration. If you experience any of these, get inside or somewhere cool and drink plenty of cool (but not cold) water.
Although it may be hard to remember to keep ourselves hydrated when we're having so much fun, you should always make time to take care of yourself, even if it's just following these few tips.
